So the American fanatics who recently turned back the clock 50 years? They are are just getting started. They are bent on turning America into a totalitarian state. First the rights of pregnant women. Next those of gays, of non-whites, you get the idea. Think Germany — not of the 1940s and full-blown Nazism but of the 1930s and the rise of fascism.
And Canada? Well, we are cast in the role of 1930s France. You remember: the peaceable country that got invaded, occupied and abused by its far-more-powerful neighbour?
During the rise of the Nazis, any number of journalists sounded the alarm. The American Dorothy Parker. The Canadian Matthew Halton. What is that saying? Something about how, when History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes.
On July 1, Canadians should be rallying around the great bulwark that IS this country, CANADA, which was created largely in response to sabre-rattling south of the border. So what are we doing? How are we preparing?
Well, on the right, we have a lunacy of fascist yahoos heading for Ottawa to celebrate their own ignorance and stupidity.
On the left, we have self-appointed identity-politicians proclaiming that we should erase the word “Canada” from Canada Day. . . and maybe, while we’re at it, knock down another statue or two.
Here in Quebec City, where I chance to be writing, we have a nationalist provincial government determined to turn Quebec, slowly but surely, into an ethnic state. Have I missed anyone?
I don’t know for sure, but I am wondering if it isn’t time for all the destructive nay-sayers to stand down? Canada is not a perfect country, never will be — but it IS an extraordinary one. Some of us would argue that it is the best country in the world.
This much is certain: it is far and away the best bulwark we have to defend against the devastating human-rights cyclone whirling our way out of the south.
Wake up, people, to the greatness that is Canada! July 1? Happy Wake-Up-to-Canada Day!
