WAKE-UP-TO-CANADA DAY – TAKE 2

So here we are in Quebec, Kamouraska country, with me chasing around after my 17th-century Quebecois ancestors.  Sheena shot these pix. Are we having fun yet? You betcha! Because also we are celebrating WAKE-UP-TO-CANADA DAY!  Whole-heartedly. Unreservedly. Even, dare I say it, unapologetically.

Of course we Canadians face a myriad of concerning issues, starting perhaps with climate change. You know what the others are. Russia invading Ukraine. China seeking global domination. These and a few other issues dominate newspapers and talk shows day after day after day.  Shall I be honest? Taken all together, I say they merit 20-25 per cent of our attention, worry, and concern.

Wait, what? Yup. I for one am devoting 75 to 80 per cent of my concern to a single, over-riding issue: I AM ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED BY WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE UNITED STATES! The fantastical over-turning of women’s rights is the latest flashing sign. So many Republicans still defending Donald Trump? But here is the catch: when the U.S. goes full-blown totalitarian, what happens to Canada? Remember the Doctrine of Manifest Destiny? The Nazis imported the idea and called it Lebensraum. Then they invaded France.

Call me crazy – a wild-eyed, raving lunatic. But I see this political, social and cultural entity we call CANADA as the only thing we have standing between us and occupation. So, yeah: I am eating my ice cream. I am celebrating this country like mad. HAPPY WAKE-UP-TO-CANADA-DAY!

I would not be totally surprised if at some future time the U.S. decides it wants to annex Canada. If, or perhaps I should say when, their water supply dries up in the west and their electoral college chooses a Trump clone; then almost anything is possible.

Diane, you’ve got that right. People should ask themselves: Do I really want to live in The Handmaid’s Tale? And act accordingly.

I could not agree more – been worrying about this since Trump ran for President. Canadians are sitting ducks for predators. Already on Fox news they’re calling Trudeau’s government “communist.”.When they “win” the next election (which they will, with or without their myriad nefarious means and/or because the Dems are so hopelessly fractured and lame), they will grab a pretext for the invasion of Canada from a well-used hat. And the rest will be written (if any of them can actually write) in the Heroic History of the United Sociopaths of America.
On a lighter note, Happy Canada Day! Let’s enjoy it while we can. What a beautiful country; shame about the neighbours.

Anne, I like to think we have a wee bit more time to mount a resistance. Time to shuck off our solipsism,, our navel-gazing, our virtue-signalling, and wake up to the fact that we have built something marvellous here — something worth fighting for. Can we please say two elections?

Well said and couldn’t agree more 😊 I started reading Chris Hedges book` “ American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America “ Very disturbing and unsettling account of the current war on America by the Christian Fundamental Right for political gain 😠 I have only began the book but the forward by Umberto Eco, explains “ Eternal Fascism: Fourteen Ways to Look at a Blackshirt” and as you read the 14 ways it becomes it is very alarming as you can see how easily this is and can unfold … as he notes at the end of the forward “ Freedom and Liberation are an unending task” So today I hope everyone finds some time to reflect, share and celebrate what an amazing country we live in 😊 In this chaotic world, we should take nothing for granted nor grow complacent 🤔 As a country are we perfect? Of course not, we have much to learn about each other and its up to us to change what is broken … Happy Canada Day everyone, hope you enjoy your celebrations today 🇨🇦

Thanks, Jean. Hedges is always interesting. I will be tracking down that book.

We are closer than we understand. The CPC aligns in many key areas with the GOP, and to drive that home, Poilievre marched with the so-called protestors on the Canadian capital on Canada day.

People must NOT confuse fiscal conservatism with what the CPC represents in this country. Fiscal “responsibility” is the carrot. The cart behind is laden with a putrid load of
limitations on rights, freedoms, autonomy, and destruction of the Canadian Charter.
