Ottawa is a powder keg set to explode

Ottawa is a powder keg set to explode. That’s what woke me at 4 a.m. – that thought. To end the occupation, the army will have to confront the hard-core illegals. Why? Because this siege, this blockade, is NOT a protest over vaccine mandates. What we have here is an alt-right uprising – a wannabe revolution.

Wait, what? Most people are still calling it a protest.

Sorry, that’s a smokescreen. A Trojan Horse. And the true believers who brought their children to camp out in Ottawa are themselves delusional hostages. It’s sad, I know. But true.

Ken, Ken. Go back to sleep. Where do you get these ideas?

Well, contemporary reports for starters. Listen to Matt Gurney or David Climenhaga: here and here. Or check out three new books: The Changing World Order by Ray Dalio, The Next Civil War by Stephen Marche, How Civil Wars Start by Barbara F. Walter.

I dunno, Ken. I think you can stop tossing and turning. You’re fretting that a nascent civil war is spilling over into Canada — one of the most peaceful countries in the world.  Civil wars don’t happen here!

Maybe not. But we HAVE seen invasions. The first came in 1776. The siege of Quebec.

So you anticipate an American invasion?

Not at all. But the U.S. is divided. Polarized. And I do worry about the bad guys. On January 6, 2021, the bad guys delivered an attempted coup. Now they’re excitedly backing the Ottawa Occupation, offshoots in Windsor and elsewhere, outcomes to be determined.

You’re talking crazy.

Believe me, I hope I’m wrong. But also I’ve spent the past year researching the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe. Along with the Nazi occupation of France and certain dystopian visions of tomorrow. Trump’s America, Hitler’s France, Canada’s Future.  When the alt-right takes power in a flailing America, we’ll be staring into the face of Manifest Destiny — an old familiar doctrine that the Nazis found useful as a justification for any run-of-the-mill occupation.

What? There’s that word again. Surely the police can handle these blockades.

They’re saying they can’t. Our politicians don’t want to believe them. But eventually, I expect the Canadian army will be driven to take action. The Big Fight to come not opposite the Parliament Buildings but at the occupiers’ well-fortified secondary encampment. That, I fear, will be the explosion.

Yeah, yeah, right. So what, as you rise, do you see as the good news?

The good news is that now at least we are awake and standing.

Ottawa and the other blockades–I just tweeted this–are our country’s Kristallnacht in 1938. The manipulators on the internet are the “Hitler” and the blockaders are his youth and storm troopers.

I don’t want to agree with you; but I fear you may be correct. I’d rather discover that we are both wrong. At the very least, the protests are unsettling and unfair to the many people who suffer because of them. I do think that some of the folk who are participating are misled. Some of them mistrust mainstream media (legacy media as they refer to it) even though what they actually read or listen to comes from media with no standards at all re accuracy.

Ken I agree with you. And I too have been preoccupied with these blockades and occupations which have nothing to do with legitimate protest. If they had gathered for a day as they did in Toronto then gone back to whatever they do… fine. But the Ottawa occupation and the Coutts and Windsor blockades are something different. They are an attempt by a small minority to impose its will on a whole nation regardless of the cost in huirting people and endangering their health. I think this is ultimately much more dangerous than the FLQ crisis and the government should invoke the war measures act to enable the drivers to be arrested and the vehicles temporarily impounded. The army also needs to be involved to back up police. If governments at all level cave to this blackmail it will be an invitation for the fascist impulse to grow…clothed in the call of freedom. They even had gall to use the MLK phrase Let Freedom Ring.

You are right: everybody wake up to this threat. What can we do?? Solidarity needed.

In support of this worry I would recommend looking up a book by Jason Stanley titled “How Fascism Works”.
I’ve seen him featured on PBS Amanpour & Company a couple of times. His insights are very worrying for our times.

Yes, indeed. Stanley’s book is excellent. I also like The Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton, Twilight of Democracy by Anne Applebaum, On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder, and Fascism: A Warning, by Madeline Albright.
